I was extremely fortunate to arrive in Luang Prabang, Laos on the very first day of the Lao New Year celebration, also known as 'Py Mai Lao.' Hyped up as 'Songkran' in Thailand, Py Mai Lao does away with the commercialisation of the event, though I honestly cannot say the same about the excitement. The celebration was nothing short of being splashingly spectacular. I had a fine time ducking out of the way of buckets of water, a battalion of water gun armed tourists and children, along with other unspeakable forms ammunition. After two days of shooting from a tele lens which just narrowly escaped a watery fate, I chucked my D50 in my room, got myself armed with a most humbling weapon - a plastic squirt gun - and went out hunting. It was time for revenge! Enjoy this set of photographs from my 2007 backpacking expedition through the Greater Mekong region of Indochina. |
